The After Hour Sweet Tooth

Chocolatey, soft, and moist, the brownies from Ooh Lala’s Bakery will melt into your mouth while the Mississippi heat beams on your skin. Fondren After Five was a sweets factory with Ooh Lala’s Bakery. Ran by LaSonya Walton, a 21 year old entrepreneur, she home makes these sweet treats and sells them at a very low price. She has been selling since high school and plans to have her own bakery in the future.

She did not have a table set up like the other vendors. She stated that she did not have enough time to reserve a spot so the sign and the pink bowl would suffice.

The heat didn’t stop Walton from carrying the large pink bowl that contained brownies and peanut butter Rice Krispy treats. She marched around like a toy soldier on a mission, determined and focused on one goal, to sell as much as she could.

“It’s really hot out here, but I didn’t bake 100 and something brownies and however many Rice Krispy treats for anything. I can’t flake.” she said as she dramatically swiped at a pretend sweat gland.

She stops around a group of three adults and politely asks if they want a brownie or Rice Krispy treats, but they all declined. Still determined, she moves on to the next group. “I don’t want any, but take this dollar and give the next kid you see a free brownie.” one of the guys from the crowd stated.

Walton was flattered and it made her continue on her delighted journey around fondren. The music from the live band made her get into a enthusiastic mood. “I try to stay positive at all times. That’s the ultimate key to selling for me. Just stay level headed and stay prayed up.” Walton said as she continued the walk.

“Anybody wanna buy a brownie or Rice Krispy treat?” she asks a group of college kids. To her surprise, she recognized a familiar face that enlightened their other friends that Walton’s treats were delicious. Three sales were made within that minute.

She walked slowly to a parent with one child. Before the parent could say no, his son immediately notices the brownies. “I’ll take two.” the father said. Walton proceeds with the purchase and walks away with a heavy smile on her face.

“This bowl is getting lighter and lighter.” she yells out and she lifts the bowl vertically as if it’s a dumbell.

Many customers around the block exclaimed to her that they did not have loose dollars on them and she would tell them that she took cards and cash app. “I know people don’t always have money on them. Come on now, we live in the world of technology. I let it slide in high school. But I had to advance myself as far making money. So now people don’t have an excuse not to buy.” Walton said as she trotted down the slope of the road.

A group of women dressed as witches come barging through the streets riding on bikes at a slow pace. Walton makes it her mission to advertise. She manages to get two of them to buy a brownie and she attracted another group of young adults.

The passion she has for baking can be seen through the way she sells her product.

“I honestly can’t recall the last time I’ve been able to sit down and relax this week. I’ve been so busy baking, but I love it. I feel like this is something that I want to do for the rest of my life. I’ve been baking since middle school. I used to sacrifice getting in trouble and getting my profit confiscated in high school just so I could show off my talents.” said Walton.

She starts to sweat a little, but still she holds the pink bowl up like she’s the statue of liberty. The people around her start to notice the bowl and stop her to ask what she’s selling. She responds everytime in an angelic, polite voice.

She circles the block again and garners a slew of customers. The sales have started to pick up momentum. She begins to become overwhelmed.

“I love when I sell fast. However, I have really bad memory so if someone tells me to save them something, I’m most likely going to forget so I always tell them to make a preorder. That way, your brownie or cupcake or whatever will be on lock.” she says as she turns a pretend key.

Time winds down and the night sky falls. The crowd starts to thin, but she still wanted to sell more. She was down to her last couple of brownies and Rice Krispy treats.

“I try to sell out. I hate going home with leftovers. If I do have any, I just sell them at school the next day.” she said.

Just as she was about to go to her car, she was bombarded by a group of younger children and sold every last brownie that she had left. The sales were made and the sweet teeth were satisfied that night.
